Today, my “Introduction to Literature” students took an exam over the poetry unit of our course. After turning in her essay, one student remembered it is my birthday and wished me a happy birthday, which started a chain reaction of birthday wishes from my other students as they came up to my desk, one at a time, to turn in their exams. It was moving in a sappy, Mr. Holland’s Opus kind of way, so I wanted to share. Teaching is not a bad gig.
